1) Pick a segment: College students with concentration issues.
2/3/4)
Interview #1: After talking to a student who felt very distracted, overwhelmed and unproductive with his college work, I found out interesting information:
i. Problem rec: His problem recognition came up after walking out of the building, after his first exam this semester. The interviewee felt like he failed the exam. He claimed to have studied but he also said his study sessions where not very efficient he wasted a lot of time multitasking and unfocused learning.
ii. Info search: The interviewee felt the need for support in that situation and started googling. He claimed to have watched videos on YouTube, but his study habits still have not changed and he is still distracted from all the things that are happening around him, including his Xbox and his phone he claimed.
Interview #2: I talked to a girl in the library and she told me all about her difficulties when studying, she claimed “I just cannot stay focused. My brain constantly comes up with other things to do. It wants to do anything besides working what is important”. The interviewee claimed that she spends a lot of her time on Instagram, which is usually the first stop after losing focus.
i. Problem rec: She first realized her problem in the library when she was seeing others just studying without any breaks. She felt like she was not nearly getting as much done as others and did not want to bring up her feeling because she thought no one understands her. The interviewee’s grades are not very good either, she claimed.
ii. Info search: She claimed to have gone to different support centers on campus to help her with her focus issues, but nothing helped, and it did not make her feel very comfortable.
Interview #3: This interviewee spent 5.67 hours on his phone on average and picked it up 230 times a day. I believe that our screen time has parallels to our productivity (more cell phone screen time/ less productivity/more distraction). Just as I thought he had been struggling with focusing on his work.
i. Problem rec: He realized his shortcomings when he tried to practice focused on studying, every time he failed, and his mind drifted away. He heard about what a flow state is in one of his classes and could not feel that flow for himself.
ii. Info search: He started doing some research online. He came across a video on YouTube that talks about distractions and focus. He claimed it made sense to him, but he was not able to change anything about his work habits.
5&6) Report the findings of the research and conclude:
To sum up, the interviewees do not want to talk about their study problems because it seems like it might be something people do not enjoy sharing. Their go-to-source is not people but more extended online research. They do not feel like talking to their friends or family about this. Some prospects looked for on-campus services but did not find it adequate. Problem recognition happens after exams but also when it comes to studying. The interviewees would appreciate some tool, a coach or guidance to make them more focused, productive and happy overall. They also claim that all these distractions overwhelm them and do not necessarily make them happy.
Good evening Steven,
ReplyDeleteIt seems like all the people that you interviewed came across the same problem, which was a distraction from outside sources. Whether it be an Xbox, a phone, or other activities, all of them seem to be distractions that keep students from focusing on the task at hand. You did a great job describing your interviews and finding the similarities between them. Additionally, you were able to get interviews with a distinct group of people, allowing you to see the similarities of people with different character traits. Overall, this was a great way to tackle the problem of distractions for college students. Great work!
Hey Steven,
ReplyDeleteThe issue students are having focusing on school work is an epidemic. Before computers were invented, students had to study using books. As a result, they could not easily switch from one task to the next. Now with technology everything is connected and that makes it too easy to switch between tasks. I believe that phone lockers and things that keep our devices out of sight would solve this issue but that would cost a lot and I'm not sure that college students would give up their devices that easily.
