The general theme of the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Carol Dweck, is that most successful people live by a growth mindset. The growth mindset is a way of thinking that makes us better people and makes us learn from our failures and downfalls. This mindset can be used in every life situation, with your family, friends or in your professional settings. Carol Dweck also claims that success does not necessarily have any correlation with one's IQ, but much more the mindset one has. Carol compares the fixed mindset with the growth mindset in many life situations.
The book made me realize that cheating your way through in this class, by writing vague blog posts just to get it over with is a fixed mindset characteristic. The growth mindset would see the possible growth from doing the assignment not just to get it done and get an A in the class, but to learn as much as possible from this course. The book also made me realize that I already have developed a growth mindset in many areas and reading about this more, it hammered it into my brain and it’s stuck in there now.
An exercise I would recommend after reading this book would involve the following:
For a whole day, try to find the positive in everything. You are not allowed to be negative about anything. For example, You have to write a long paper for your ENT3003 class and you just don’t feel like doing it. A negative thought pops into your mind. Replace it by saying something positive to yourself. For example, I will learn how to build a business better after writing this paper which will help me in the future. By learning to see the positive in situations and realizing that the hard things in life are the greatest learning and growth experiences, the attitude in the situation will be better, which will also increase the result.
My biggest ‘aha’ moment was when I noticed that this concept can be applied to almost any situation in life. Also, I realized how rare growth-minded people area and I tried to analyze successful people to see what mindset they had (Fixed or Growth). They all had a growth mindset! None of them believed failing was a bad thing. I noticed that they all failed more than anyone else and they had a positive relationship with it.
Overall, it was an eye-opening book I can recommend to anyone that is striving to acquire his/her maximum potential.
Hello Steve
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job with your reading reflection and in providing a glimpse into what you learned after reading this book. I did not happen to choose this book, but can see similarities in the themes. I read "How to Fail at Everything, and still Win Big" and it is very similar in the way that it emphasizes how you can learn from failure. Failure provides a growth opportunity and by utilizing a growth mindset, you put yourself in a great position to learn from your mistakes. The exercise that you suggested for this course is very unique and I can see how that would be effective in instilling a growth mindset within the ENT3003 course.
